Setting the right tone early

Law school orientation started this week, which means daily library tours for the incoming first year students. Historically, we've always started these tours with an overview of library policies (e.g., no food, cell phones only in designated areas, etc.).

Today, however, one of our librarians asked a great question: Should we really start off our relationship with students by focusing on what they can't do right out of the gate? The tours last about 20 minutes, leaving plenty of time to cover the rules later. But we only get one chance to make a first impression. Why blow it with a laundry list of negatives?
